Working with Ashley
Hi! I’m Ashley. I have spent my career providing therapy, advocacy, and crisis support to individuals and families experiencing distress, violence, and the lasting effects of trauma.
My professional experience and personal path have taught me that relational harm requires relational healing. Trauma isolates us. Trauma is disconnection from others, and from ourselves. Healing from trauma can occur when we are seen, safe, and connected.
I believe that all people have an innate capacity to heal when we experience the support and connection we deserve. That means that in my work, I prioritize relationship building and safety. Many trauma survivors have developed extensive strategies to keep themselves safe. Unfortunately, the same strategies that were once necessary for safety can disrupt the ability to connect, belong, and experience a full range of emotions.
In our work together, we can process how your body and mind learned to protect themselves, and how to safely shift some of these strategies to expand your capacity for connection, joy, and expansion.
Experience
I began my career supporting survivors of sexual violence, including rape, sexual assault, trafficking, and child sexual abuse. For more than ten years, I have been dedicated to serving survivors and helping develop and expand services to meet their needs. Supporting survivors of sexual violence remains one of the areas of work I am most passionate about, both through therapy and advocacy.
As my training and experience have expanded throughout my career, so has the range of individuals and families I serve. Many people who do not identify as trauma survivors can still benefit greatly from working with a therapist who understands trauma and nervous system regulation. Often, we have experiences in childhood that we do not recognize as traumatic or distressing, yet they continue to shape our relationships, coping strategies, and sense of self. Perhaps one or both parents were physically or emotionally unavailable. Perhaps there was a family member struggling with substance use or mental health concerns. Perhaps you felt unseen, unsupported, or unsafe for reasons that are difficult to fully understand. Experiences such as medical trauma, a difficult birth, chronic stress, or other early life challenges can also impact our sense of safety and well-being in ways that persist into adulthood.
I am also skilled in supporting individuals and families navigating pregnancy, postpartum adjustment, miscarriage, infertility, and parental burnout. These major events are not always acknowledged as traumatic, but often need the same kind of support. Earlier in my career, I worked closely with non-offending parents of children who had experienced sexual abuse, which deepened my appreciation for the unique challenges parents face during difficult and uncertain times. As a mother of twins, I understand firsthand how rewarding, overwhelming, and transformative parenting can be.
In addition, I work with individuals experiencing substance use concerns, anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, and other mental health challenges. My approach is grounded in helping clients better understand themselves, strengthen their coping skills, and build a greater sense of safety, connection, and resilience.
I am trained in Somatic Experiencing and hold a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from George Washington University. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the District of Columbia.
Other Offerings
Clinical Supervision
I offer clinical supervision to graduate-level licensed therapists seeking professional growth and support.
Advocacy Services
Outside of my therapy practice, I provide advocacy services for individuals navigating the aftermath of sexual or family violence. I specialize in supporting non-offending parents or caregivers of children who have experienced sexual abuse and are in family court or criminal court proceedings.
Consultation
I provide consultation for organizations seeking to strengthen their survivor-serving programs through services or policy. I have many years of experience developing and expanding services for people impacted by crime, including advocacy services, crisis hotline services, hospital and law enforcement interview accompaniment, mental health services including groups, temporary housing, and prevention education. I have informed legislation to expand the rights of teen survivors in the District of Columbia, and have built an advocacy program from the ground up to ensure survivors’ rights are upheld.
I also provide training to professionals or groups seeking to better understand how to work with youth survivors of trafficking, and how to prevent and respond to child sexual abuse.
As an experienced supervisor for frontline staff serving survivors of violence, I also provide training and technical assistance related to prevention and response for Secondary Traumatic Stress.
